Child Health

Dr Shaikh has a special interest in child health, and treats a number of conditions. As a general practitioner, he will generally be your first point of contact if your child is unwell. He will help address any concerns you might have, and in some cases, may refer you to a specialist if necessary.

Dr Shaikh is also available to assist with early childhood check-ups, advice regarding diet, mental health and general wellbeing.

What conditions does Dr Shaikh treat?

One of the most common childhood illnesses is the common cold, which may include symptoms like fever, congestion, coughing, and throat infection.

Some other common conditions affecting children include:

  • Roseola
    The signs of roseola include fever, congestion, coughing and a rash that starts on the chest. Make an appointment to see Dr Shaikh if your child's fever spikes or lasts longer than three days.
  • Gastroenteritis
    This condition causes vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. It can be caused by a number of viruses. Dehydration is a potential side-effect, which should be treated as soon as possible.
  • Hand-foot-mouth disease
    Characterised by painful sores in the mouth and throat, this condition is highly contagious. Other symptoms may include achiness, as well as blisters on the soles of the feet and on the hands.
  • Strep throat
    This condition occurs as a result of a bacterial infection and causes severe throat pain, as well as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fever.
  • Flu
    Characterised by fever, headache, sore throat and coughing, flu is a common condition that can lead to complications if left untreated.
  • Pinkeye
    Pinkeye refers to the inflammation of the tissue lining the eyelids. It is often caused by a bacterial infection, which requires antibiotic treatment.
  • Pinworms
    Worms are a fairly common condition in young children, but can be treated with prescription medication.
