This beautiful painting is one of a very important organ. Yes that’s correct, the kidneys.
Most of us know what they look like but what do they actually do and why are they important?
The kidneys are two bean shaped organs situated in the deeper parts of the body called the retroperitoneal organs ie. They are deeper than most structures such as the liver or bladder etc. This is a very important fact to remember. I will come back to this.
Functions of the kidney include:
helps regulate blood pressure and water regulation
one of the organs that gets rid of toxins
regulates the acid-base balance in the body. These are measured by pH and even our bodies have an optimum pH value
whereby all our cells and organs can function optimally. A common example of drastic change in pH is the diabetic coma or DKA.
helps with red cell production
filters the blood
helps with Vitamin D activation this helping bone absorption when needed
It stands to reason that kidney health is extremely important. Unconsciously we do play a role in the overall health of our kidneys.
❌Smoking, alcohol consumption, large doses of Aspirin and non steroidal anti inflammatory medication (Grandpa®️)
Uncontrolled Diabetes as well as Uncontrolled Blood pressure are just some instances that play a major role in kidney damage.
So coming back to the kidneys being a retroperitoneal organ; this would mean that the nerves used to convey pain in these organs are sometimes far from the actual site of pain. We call this “REFERED PAIN”.
Backpain associated with pain into the groin or pain to the clitoris(females) or glans of the penis(males) could indicate that a kidney stone might be present.
The overall message here is to once again be mindful of what we do to our bodies. We only have one body and there are no replacement parts that are as good as the original, so start that walking , jogging, swimming, Zumba class today. Unknowingly, you are looking after your kidneys.
